New to Water Softeners?
We know that if you’ve just had a water softener fitted, you probably have a few questions — especially about the salt you add. Don’t worry, it’s simpler than it sounds!
What Does the Salt Do?
The salt in your water softener is used to create a brine solution. A little water sits at the bottom of the salt container, and when needed, it mixes with the salt to make brine.

How Does the Softener Work?
Inside your water softener are tiny resin beads that grab onto the minerals (like calcium and magnesium) that cause limescale. This process is called ion exchange — it’s what makes your water soft.

Why Does It Need Brine?
Over time, the resin beads get full of hardness minerals. To clean them, your softener uses a small amount of brine in a process called regeneration. This washes away the minerals so the resin is ready to go again.

Is My Drinking Water Salty?
Absolutely not. The salty brine never mixes with your household water. During regeneration, the resin is isolated and rinsed, and all the used brine is flushed safely away. The only water that comes into your taps is clean, softened water.
Where's the hard water hiding?

Hard Water in the UK
Much of the UK has hard water, which means the water contains higher levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium. While not harmful to health, hard water can cause problems in your home:
-
Limescale build-up in kettles, showers, and appliances
-
Reduced efficiency of boilers and heating systems
-
Higher energy bills due to scale-coated pipes
-
Dry skin and dull-looking hair
Why Quality Salt Matters
A water softener is the best way to tackle hard water, but it needs the right salt to work properly. Using high-quality, pure salt ensures:
-
Effective softening – resin beads are fully cleaned and ready to keep removing hardness minerals.
-
Longer appliance life – your dishwasher, washing machine, and softener itself last longer when free from scale.
-
No blockages or residue – poor-quality salt can contain impurities that clog your system or leave deposits behind.
